Bushcraft Knives: Buying Guide

These are the main factors to examine before purchasing your bushcraft knives.

πŸ”ͺ Blade Size & Type

Blade size is important when choosing knives. A short blade doesn't necessarily mean the knife is not good, but it'll only be suitable for limited tasks. A bushcraft knife with a blade measuring more than 3.5-inches will be fit for a lot of tasks. Also, the blade should have a durable thickness and a good grind - preferably Scandinavian, chisel, or convex grind.

πŸ—‘οΈ Serrated Edges

The best advice when it comes to serrated edges is to get a half-serrated edged bushcraft knife if you can afford only one knife. Better still, you should get a full-serrated edge knife and a non-serrated edge knife if you can afford both. You don't know what you'll be cutting in the wild. You'll cut better and much faster with a serrated edge bushcraft knife.

βœ… Handle & Blade Material

How good is the handle of the knife? Is it easy to hold even in wet conditions? Is the knife a full-tang knife? Can you attach a lanyard to the knife's blade? Do you need a pommel at the end of the handle? These are a few questions that will help you make informed buying decisions.

For blade materials, we recommend looking at knives with stainless steel and carbon steel blades. They tend to last long and keep their edges sharp. Don't forget to oil the stainless steel blades from time to time to keep the rust away from it.

3️⃣ Sheath

A knife sheath is a must-have for a bushcraft knife. The heat should be quality if you want something that'll last. It should have provisions for easy attachment to your belt. Also, features like the firestarter and grinding stone will come in handy if the sheath has them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Different things make a good bushcraft knife, but we'll highlight a few of them. The knife should have a flat cutting edge with a long spine and taper off at a tip. It should be lightweight and have solid build quality. And the inclusion of features like a sharpener and a firestarter can make a whole lot of difference.

A good bushcraft knife should have a blade that is about 3.2mm thick. Most knives that have carbon steel blades are as thick as this.

Most of the bushcraft knives you'll find in the market are made from carbon steel and stainless steel materials. Both are good options for blades and we recommend getting knives with such blades. For stainless steel blades, consider oiling it from time to time to help preserve it.
